The Art Dept

 Drawing and Painting is a four session class that will provide lively instruction, in-house art demos, and ample studio time for the making of art. We will be doing art pieces that involve pencils, markers, wax resist, watercolor and acrylic paint. The class is geared to jump start your creative process and develop your artistic abilities.  Students must be at least 16 years of age. No previous experience is necessary.  All materials will be provided; however, you may bring your own supplies as well.  When: The class will take place over 4 Tuesdays, January 3rd- 24th from 12-2. Here’s the rules of watercolor according to me:    Rule #1: Watercolor is colored water Paint with pure clear water first.  Then add color and let it flow. Literally let it flow. It’s colored water. See, it’s an official rule. And by that I mean, something I wrote on a page of my art journal. I am excited to announce a Watercolor class that will happen in early 2021. Check it out here.

       People often ask the artist, when seeing a painting, “How long did that take?” The simple honest answer is something like two hours and forty some years. Two hours of painting, and forty some years of work, design, research, trial and error, determination, struggle, blood sweat and tears.         Looking back at 40 years or so of making art, and what I have learned:           When I was in Design 2 in the Art program of my University, our professor gave us an assignment. It was called “I Am-This Is.” The idea was to describe who we are and then give a visual representation of it. Since I had recently gotten involved with a Christian ministry and was learning how to live according to God’s Word, I wanted my story to reflect the Word in my life.       I was eagerly, breathlessly waiting outside the door of the 3rd floor painting studio, anticipating my turn at the hallowed easel. There, the renowned and venerable professor would lovingly and patiently teach me how to paint with oils.  Now here I was, in the very studio of my dreams. And all I would hear from the renowned and wise professor was (after a long and awkward pause, her looking over my shoulder)  “Well, finish this one and go on to the next one.”       Embarrassment. Heartbreak. Doubt. Anger. All these stirred up inside me while sitting in front of that easal. How was I to finish this one and go on to the next one when I didn’t know HOW? Could you just SHOW ME HOW?      Looking back now, I fully realize that was the best advice I could’ve gotten at the time.
