If you were to mix the paint color of Marsala, you would need to mix some green into the red. It's mostly red with a little green. Green is the opposite, or complement of red on the color wheel and therefore mutes it. And that's the beauty of marsala: it is a muted red, soft and ruddy. So it's red with a bit of white and a bit of black and a bit of green.
