A Delightful Experience and great coffee

   



  I recently had a delightful experience at the Gaslight Art Colony. I was invited to have a solo exhibition of my art, which is a collection of mixed media paintings called "Of the Woods". Jo, the gallery director, informed me there would be three rooms and a long hallway available to display my work. She arranged for an opening for a Thursday evening, even though the openings for artists are normally on Saturdays. This invitation motivated me to go into "full-tilt production mode" in the studio, during what is normally "downtime".

When I arrived to set up the show, Jo and some of the art colony members were very helpful in deciding where and how to hang all the pieces. The opening was well attended and I received much positive feedback about the art. By the end of the three weeks the show was up, I had sold two paintings and am now scheduled to teach a workshop. I look forward to working together with the Gaslight Art Colony!


Here I am standing next to the painting which is in the Gypsy Queen Coffee Shop. This is the piece that eventually led me to being invited to have the show. 


Speaking of the Gypsy Queen Coffee Shop, I think a great cup of coffee is the perfect complement to enjoying an art exhibit. I feel honored to have my art in the coffee bar and look forward to my next visit.

August Happenings at the Art Dept!

  Grab a seat at the table for any or all upcoming workshops! Every Tuesday morning, we're inviting home school groups for a morning of art-making. Wednesday evening is time for adult painting sessions. Bring your own project or follow along with Sandy. Thursday morning is Java & Journal, where we spend time with illustrated art journaling while drinking yummy coffee. First timers will receive a fresh new watercolor journal.  Friday 3-6 is the $5 art class at the Alexandria Farmers & Artists Market. Different make & take project weekly. No reservation required. Harmonious Blends and other musings

       So what makes it a harmonious blend?      Harmony is a combination of units which are similar in one or more respects. Units are harmonious when one or more of their elements or qualities, such as shape, size, or color, are alike.      In this sketch, done by my husband in preparation for a painting commission of a Chilean vineyard, I am struck by the harmonious blend of the directional lines that lead the eye through the painting. Design in art is not random, it is planned by the use of the elements of design, such as line tone, color and form. In this drawing, the lines of the vineyard rows lead the eye of the viewer toward the distance and then back toward the front. Harmony is achieved by the variegated, yet similar, lines that form the rows of planted vines.       In 2019, I am going to explore all aspects of visual harmony.
